In general this is pretty good, as well as Wordweb you can even download a 2003 version of Wikipedia for it (160MB, 200,000 articles, text only) which is very useful and loads instantaneously. Unfortunately despite MDict's Chinese origins, I find that chinese, japanese & phonetic characters display as squares even if the correct font is available.

The programme is compatible with WM5. But there is a special version for smartphone. You got to install the program from the PC while you synchronize it with your PPC.

The best so far.

After installing the dictionary a message appeared informing me that the program might not work properly with my system as the program was incompatible with the WM5.0. I tried to remove the dictionary but have not been successful. Can anybody help?

As I have said earlier, MDict is a fantastic dictionary application. In terms of dictionary content, I find the Princeton University's Wordnet english dictionary to be the best for MDict (very comprehensive). However, Wordnet does NOT have pronounciation guide -- but then again, who needs one when you can get your PDA to read out the word so that you know how it should be pronounced. I would like to take this opportunity to cross link to another software on freewareppc.com which does this pronounciation work. The software is called Flite and can be found at: http://www.freewareppc.com/multimedia/flite.shtml. After you check a word on MDict, just copy and paste it into Flite (a speech synthesiser) to listen to how it should be pronounced. Those interested in MDict may find Flite a useful complement to MDict.

This is a great little piece of software! I was amazed at the speed at which it finds words. Other dictionaries take a while to look up words, but this one finds them instantaneously. Thanks for this must-have program.

To answer Kevin's question below on where to get the dictionary library data. Go to http://www.octopus-studio.com/download.en.htm. Look for WordNet and download. This would be the English dictionary to use with this software.

This is excellent. I tried a lot of dictionaries and this one is the best. You download the software here and then follow the link to download one the "dictionary data". I downloaded Webster. You install the sotware on PPC and then transfer the dictionary data to the folder you choose (Storage card for e.g). Bingo!

Hi guys, I have a question here for those who had downloaded this application. What does it mean use libraries built by user?? After we downloaded, do we need to go online using our PDA to download something else?? Thank's for your reply.

It's me again. As far as I am concerned this is the best little application I have discovered in ages. I compiled a text dictionary some time ago for use with Daniele Masos DM dictionary. Unfortunately that dictionary does not work when you have the .net framework installed and it has not been rewritten as yet. I have now converted my dictionary using the MDX builder and I now have a very usable and useful version of my dictionary on my pocket pc. I forgot to mention in my previous review that the wordnet dictionary has numerous hyperlinks for cross-referencing. Mdict. and mdx builder was the missing link in my case and I would like to extend mo mhile buiochas (a thousand thanks!)to Mr. Rayman Zhang and his team.

I tried a few dictionary readers recently and I eventually bought one. This application is better than any of them and the only snag is the limited number of dictionaries available in mdx format. It is very easy to use and the look up icon/function works very well. I downloaded the wordnet dictionary and I am amazed at how comprehensive it is. It gives detailed information on medical and scientific words, acronyms and famous people. More of an enclyclopedia...a great pocket reference. There is also a desktop version which seems to require Windows 2000 or XP. This also works very well. The application does not include any help files but they are not really neccessary as it is so easy to use. There are not that many dictionaries available in mdx format but the wordnet dictionary alone is an invaluable resource. It is also possible to convert text and other dictionary files using the mdx builder but the process is a bit tricky. Overall it is a great application.

Great Dictionary!! Don't be turned off by the Chinese dictionary shown in the screen shot above. It also has WordNet English dictionary database available for use with the application. Have very useful functions: - Can select words in *any* Pocket PC application and click an icon or button to activate dictionary to display the word meaning [Icon overlaps the start logo but can be moved to another better location] - The word meaning can be displayed either as a pop-up panel in the calling application or can auto-switch to display the MDict application instead (need to set which of these options you want in the MDict options) - If autoswitch to MDict, there is an icon that allows auto-switch back to original application once you have done your checking of the word.
