Description:
BeyondPod is a free, open source, RSS feed reader and podcast manager (podcatcher) for Microsoft Smartphone and Pocket PC.
Using BeyondPod you can subscribe for RSS feeds, read the feed content, download and listen to associated podcasts (enclosures) directly on your mobile device.
BeyondPod also provides a convenient way to play downloaded podcasts using a built in media player with features like configurable "TiVo style" commercial skip, tracking of played time, easy cleanup of played podcasts and many others.
BeyondPod requires an internet connection to download RSS feeds and podcasts. If you don't have a data plan you can still use the podcast player functionality built in BeyondPod.

Features:
- One application for all your RSS needs. You can subscribe to RSS feeds, read the content, download and play podcasts – all in a single application.
- Supports Atom, RSS 2.0 ad OPML feeds. Feeds can be read even while you are offline.
- Sophisticated podcast download engine gives you complete control of how many podcasts to download and how long to keep the old versions. Updates and podcast downloads are executed in the background while you read the feed content.
- Integrated podcast player tracks automatically what podcasts you have listened to. (You can also configure BeyondPod to use an external media player).
- You can schedule feed updates and podcast downloads daily at given time.
- Supports both importing and exporting of OPML files. You can also subscribe to online OPML feeds the same way you subscribe to RSS/Atom feeds.
- Integration with Google Reader allows you to easily to sync your Reader subscriptions.
- Feeds can be assigned to various categories (News, Sports, Technology etc.). You can quickly filter your feed list based on a category.
- Up to 2 categories can be assigned to a feed (for example Favorite and News) so you can quickly view (and update) only your "favorite" feeds across all categories.
- BeyondPod gives you full control over what is being downloaded over your data connection. You can update a single feed, all feeds in a given category, or all feeds. You can download a single podcast, the latest podcasts or all podcasts for a given feed. Nothing happens without your knowledge.
- You can create "virtual" feeds based on a content of a local folder (for example if you listen to audio books).
- Works on both devices with and without a touch screen. Windows Mobile 5 and 6 devices are supported. (BeyondPod requires .NET Compact Framework 2 or 3.5.)
- BeyondPod is community supported. It is absolutely free! No Registration! No Ads! Source code is freely available!
How do you use BeyondPod?
Download the BeyondPod CAB file directly to your device and run it. Start BeyondPod and add the RSS feeds that you like (there will be a couple of feeds already to get you started). Once the feed is added, you can view the content of each feed directly in the built in web browser. If the feed has podcasts (enclosures), BeyondPod will let you download any podcasts directly to your device. Downloaded podcasts can be played on the built in podcast player (currently based on Windows Media player).
You can also use an external podcast catcher to download the podcasts on a PC and later “push” them to your device using ActiveSync. BeyondPod will recognize and manage pushed podcasts as if they were downloaded directly to the mobile device.
Update Description:
v2.8.0:
- There is now a way to view a summary of all "unread" items across all feeds in a given category. This "category overview" is available using the "What is New..." menu item from the Feeds Menu. As there could possibly be a large number of unread items across the feeds, there is a new setting in "Feed properties" to limit the number of unread items for a given feed that show in "What is New...".
- There is now a way to add all new podcasts to the podcast download history for a feed. (There is a link for that in the feed properties). Adding the podcasts to the download history will cause BeyondPod to assume that all podcasts were already downloaded, without having to actually download them.
- Changed the functions of left and right D-pad keys in the "Feeds" and "Podcasts" views. Left key now always navigates to the built in player (if there is anything to play) and the right key navigates to the last feed content view. There are also dedicated "Go to Player" menu items in both views.
- When generating unique feed names, instead of PCXXXXX.MP3, the file name pattern is now XXXXX.MP3. This makes the podcast file name a bit more predictable and also by changing the feed name, it gives you some a control over the podcast name.
- Removed the "Beep" indicating "end of the playback" as it was very loud on some devices.
- Added settings to start automatic updates on Application Startup and on Opening of a feed.
- Added a link to Launch the BeyondShcheudler from within BeyondPod. BeyondScheduler is a companion application used to schedule various tasks such as Bluetooth On/Off and Wi-Fi On/Off (on some HTC made devices) to be executed at predefined time. BeyondPod also internally relies on the BeyondScheduler for its own scheduled updates.
- Added support for password protected feeds. You can now enter username/password in the feed properties.
- Added a global setting that allows you to hide the "Read" feed items in Content View. A nice side effect of hiding the "Read" items is that the feeds render faster because the number of items is (much) smaller. This setting can be found in Menu-> Tools-> Settings->Feed Content Settings.
v2.7.1:
- Added a media player skin for VGA devices (480x640). Thanks to Joe for creating it!
- There is now a way to clear the podcast download history for a feed. (There is a link for that in the feed properties). Deleting the download history will cause BeyondPod to re-download the podcasts for the feed on next update. This is helpful if your podcasts got accidently deleted and you want to re-download them again..
- The width of the vertical scrollbars in BeyondPod views is now tied to the default "system" scrollbar width to mitigate some complains about the "thin" scrollbars. (This affects only the devices with a touch screen).
- Fixed an issue where incorrect setting of the feed's Podcast Download Folder can cause feed podcasts to disappear after restart.
- Improved the handling of feeds that use ISO-8859-1 encoding (used by some western European languages).
- Fixed a bug that could crash BeyondPod when playing the last podcast using an external player.
v2.7.0:
- Podcasts can be now also "streamed" directly from the internet without having to first download them to the device. (Window Media Player seems to have an issue playing streaming content, and at this point podcasts can be streamed only using an external player that supports ".PLS" playlists.) You will find the "Stream" link next to the "Download" link in the Feed Content View.
- BeyondPod now allows you to mark individual feed items as read or unread.
- Added a UI setting (Menu->Tools->Settings->Feed Content Settings) to configure what browser should be used to open external web links. You can pick the internal (based on Pocket IE) or specify a command line to start any external browser that can accept the url as a command line.
- The Feed Content View now has a small ":" indicator in the title that appears if you have any unread items in the feed. It will disappear when you mark the last item in the feed as "Read".
- Added a new option to the "Auto Collapse Long Items" setting to collapse only the "Read" items.
- In the Feeds View, bolding of the feed name now indicates that the feed has one or more Unread items (similar to Outlook e-mail folder).
- Category List now displays categories with Unread feeds in bold.
- Improved the handling of links to external web pages. All external links now are opened in a separate browser instance or (if configured) in an external browser.
- When you email a link to a feed item from the Content View, device owners' e-mail address is now filled in as the first recipient of the e-mail. (This is helpful if you often send yourself feed items to read later on your PC).
- Fixed the issue where BeyondPod will crash when the registry settings for the default browser were not set correctly. BeyondPod should now also work correctly regardless of what browser was set as the default browser on the device.
- Feeds View now shows the update progress.
- Added a new Player setting to specify the file types that should be handled by the internal player.
- Added a new Feed Content setting to pick a mobile formatting engine (like Skweezer) when navigating to external web pages. Currently both Google and Skweezer are supported.
- You can now set what player will play podcasts per feed. This way some feeds can use the internal while others use the external player.
- Fixed an issue where BeyondPod was not reading correctly the ID3 tag title for podcasts whose title was stored using unicode encoding.
- When showing all podcasts for a given category, they are now sorted acros.
